About the Author


Cleveland-born and educated, Gary Bukovnik lives in San Francisco. Using watercolor, monotype and lithograph, he is known for melding sensual visual vitality with a vibrant sense of color to create floral images of astonishing depth and intensity. Honors received include Visiting Artist invitations from the American Academy, Rome (2003, 2005). In 2001, Lincoln Center invited him to create a poster for the prestigious List Commemorative Program Collection; (past contributors: Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, Alex Katz, Elizabeth Murray, Donald Sultan). Solo exhibitions include shows at Caldwell Snyder Galleries; Trajan Gallery; Campton Gallery; Concept Gallery; Elins Eagles-Smith; Bonfoey Gallery; American Conservatory Theater Gallery; Erickson Fine Art Gallery. Recent exhibitions of Gary's work have been at Butler Institute of American Art; Paula Brown Gallery; Neuhoff Gallery; Lisa Kurts Gallery; Irving Galleries; Galerie Kutter; Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art; Chin Show Cultural Center; Takashimaya; Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation; Brevard Museum of Art, (where, among works displayed was a tapestry based on one of Gary's watercolors. It was hand-woven in Aubusson, France, at Atelier Raymond Picaud, weavers since the 17th Century, and at the forefront of progressive tapestry since the 1930s; previous tapestries being based on Alexander Calder, Georges Braque, Helen Frankenthaler images.) Gary's work was presented in Flowers: Gary Bukovnik Watercolors & Monotypes (Harry N. Abrams, 1990), and in Gary Bukovnik Watercolors (Hudson Hills Press, 2005). Gary's work is found in diverse collections including: Brooklyn Museum; NY Metropolitan Museum of Art; NY Museum of Modern Art; Chicago Museum of Art; Smithsonian Institution; Butler Institute of American Art; Fine Arts Museums; Bank of America, AT&T, Neiman Marcus corporate collections; Westin Bonaventure Hotel, LA. Organizations to which Gary donates art include SF Symphony (which, since 1982, has commissioned an annual fall season poster); NY Metropolitan Opera; Refugees International, Japan; Project Open Hand, SF; Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Gary has exhibited widely in Japan, Taiwan, and China, most recently at Shanghai Hongqiao Contemporary Art Museum; Today Art Museum (Beijing); Xiamen Museum of Art; Tianjin Museum of Art; Suzhou Art Academy Museum.
